What is the best diet for humans?

What is the best diet for me?

Prof. Segal & Dr. Elinav have taken on the one-size-fits-all approach to dieting, proving it is not effective and showing how to customize your diet to lose weight and improve health. Read about this (and more) in their paradigm-shifting new book, The Personalized Diet.

The Personalized Diet is Pioneering

Up until now, we’ve always looked for absolutes when it comes to dieting and health. Universal rules that we can all learn and follow. Nutritional guidelines that say everyone needs to avoid this or eat that: kale is good; ice cream is bad, and so on.

But The Personalized Diet turns this idea of one-size-fits-all dieting on its head.

Prof. Segal lays out what led them to their exploration of personalized nutrition, and what they discovered, in this illuminating TEDx talk:

What People are Saying

  • “This remarkable, fascinating and well-crafted book from two of the leaders in the microbiome field completely changes the way we think about nutrition. By explaining how each individual’s unique microbiome drives a unique response, even to the same foods, they point the way towards not just precision medicine but precision wellness based on feeding our microbes.”

    Rob Knight
Author of Follow Your Gut: The Enormous Impact of Tiny Microbes and Professor, University of California San Diego
  • “The Personalized Diet is extremely readable and offers a fascinating insight into one of the most exciting and rapidly evolving areas of modern science. Finding two world-class scientists who can do so much original work and also write a book full of wit and humor about their research is astonishingly rare.  This is a book that deserves to be widely read.”

    Dr Michael Mosley
Author of The 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet
  • “Drs Segal and Elinav, from the prestigious Weizmann Institute, have performed pioneering scientific work to understand how and why our nutrition needs to be individualized.  In The Personalized Diet, they map out how each of us can benefit from their efforts, emphasizing the importance of the gut microbiome and blood sugar response to food intake.”

The Science Behind the Book

When Prof. Eran Segal & Dr. Eran Elinav published their groundbreaking research on personalized nutrition, it caused a media frenzy. Genuine hard science, years of meticulous research, and large-scale data prove it’s the future of dieting.

Their personalized nutrition project looked at blood glucose levels or the blood sugar response to food. They measured thousands of people, and their responses to hundreds of thousands of different meals. They found that people eating the same foods can have widely different reactions – something that’s healthy for one person, may be unhealthy for someone else.

Prof. Segal & Dr. Elinav were able to create an algorithm that can predict your personal blood sugar response to different foods. They did this through a new field of study as important as genetics: the microbiome. Your gut microbiome is the collection of all microbes that exist in your digestive tract and help you digest food. Trillions of microbes, completely unique to you, that influence the way your body reacts to different meals.

The Personalized Diet will help you to understand the fascinating science behind their breakthrough, and give you the tools to create your own customized diet and lifestyle plan.

Ruti’s Personalized Nutrition Story

For years, I’ve struggled with my weight. I’ve tried many diets. Some worked for a while, but I always regained the weight. When I participated in the Personalized Nutrition Project at the Weizmann Institute, I found out that tomatoes were causing me to have huge blood sugar spikes. Never in a million years would I have guessed that it was tomatoes!

I have always eaten a lot of tomatoes, thinking I was doing myself a favor, but now I realize this could have been a major contributor to my previous diet failures. It wasn’t my fault—it was the tomatoes!

You’ll find plenty amazing stories just like this one in The Personalized Diet
